چکیده

In music there are several terms permanently used, whose meaning changed in time, depending on the historical moment or cultural space; among them, consonance and dissonance, diatonic, chromatic, and enharmonic. Tonality appeared during baroque era and was finalized by J.S. Bach. After that, it grew up in the music of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt – for about 150 years. At the end of 19 th century, Wagner created the expanded tonality – the last step of the tonal system evolution. This tonal type represents an original, ingenious synthesis between all historical phases of the system evolution; meantime it contains the germ of polytonality and atonality. In other words, Bach and Wagner marked the beginning and end of the tonality. Key-Words: consonance, dissonance, diatonic, chromatic, enharmonic, tonality, expanded tonality, tonic.

Charting Enharmonicism on the Just Intonation Tonnetz: A Practical Approach to Neo-Riemannian Analysis

In this study, I propose a theory of voice leading for use with the tonal space of the justintonation Tonnetz. The theory is based largely upon established theories of diatonic voice leading and chromatic harmony, and also draws upon the principles of just intonation within the tonal system. The unambiguous expression of intervals as untempered ratios is dependent upon an established seven-step...

Consonance/dissonance – a Historical Perspective

This paper looks at the various approaches as taken in order to understand the phenomenon of consonance/dissonance. While an early understanding of consonance/dissonance was based upon number ratios (Pythagoras), it became a question of resonance for Descartes. Subsequently, Euler attempted to formalize the ratio approach by classifying intervals into consonance/dissonance classes according to ...

Ching-Hua Chuan

This paper explores the concepts of metrical consonance and dissonance in a broad and yet articulate way. Krebs first gives a brief review of previously studies. He then extends the definition by Yeston to combine the concepts of levels of motion and musical meter to define metrical consonance and dissonance. Another modification of Yeston’s work is extending the applicable range of dissonance ...

Functional organization for musical consonance and tonal pitch hierarchy in human auditory cortex

Pitch relationships in music are characterized by their degree of consonance, a hierarchical perceptual quality that distinguishes how pleasant musical chords/intervals sound to the ear. The origins of consonance have been debated since the ancient Greeks. To elucidate the neurobiological mechanisms underlying these musical fundamentals, we recorded neuroelectric brain activity while participan...

How culture matters in children’s purchase influence: a multi-level investigation

Children’s purchase influence (CPI) is an important factor in understanding family consumption behavior. The present study investigated the effects of cultural adaptation, including the role of acculturation and ethnicidentification, on children’s role in family purchase decisions. By conceiving of CPI as a family context-dependent phenomenon, we hypothesized that parent–child cultural dissonan...
